Hexagram 62, Xiǎo Guò (Small Exceeding): Line 3

小过卦九三 · 雷山小过 · 中文版

九三:弗过防之,从或戕之,凶。

The line (Legge)

The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject taking no extraordinary precautions against danger; and some in consequence finding opportunity to assail and injure him. There will be evil.

Small Image commentary

'Some in consequence find opportunity to assail and injure him. There will be evil:' - how great will it be!

象曰:从或戕之,凶如何也。

In plain words

Not taking extra care to guard against it, one may follow and be harmed: misfortune. The third line is strong and correct but trusts in its strength and does not guard against the petty. The Small Image asks what the misfortune will be.

Applying it to your situation

If you feel strong enough not to need caution, this line suggests some wariness is still wise. What risk have you overlooked out of confidence?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Xiǎo Guò changes into Hexagram 16 Yù (Enthusiasm). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·小过之豫.

The hexagram

Hexagram 62 Xiǎo Guò (Small Exceeding). The Judgment: Xiao Guo indicates that (in the circumstances which it implies) there will be progress and attainment. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. (What the name denotes) may be done in small affairs, but not in great affairs. (It is like) the notes that come down from a bird on the wing - to descend is better than to ascend. There will (in this way) be great good fortune.
