Hexagram 46, Shēng (Pushing Upward): Line 6 (top)
升卦上六 · 地风升 · 中文版
上六:冥升,利于不息之贞。
The line (Legge)
The sixth six, divided, shows its subject advancing upwards blindly. Advantage will be found in a ceaseless maintenance of firm correctness.
Small Image commentary
'He blindly advances upwards,' and is in the highest place: - but there is decay in store for him, and he will not (preserve) his riches.
象曰:冥升在上,消不富也。
In plain words
Rising blindly; it is favourable to be steadfast without ceasing. The top line is at the end of rising yet still wants to climb; if that unceasing drive is turned toward cultivating virtue, it is favourable. The Small Image says rising blindly at the top wears one down instead of enriching.
Applying it to your situation
If you have climbed high and cannot stop, this line suggests turning that drive toward growing as a person. Besides going higher, where else could you put your effort?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Shēng changes into Hexagram 18 Gǔ (Repairing the Spoiled). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·升之蛊.
The hexagram
Hexagram 46 Shēng (Pushing Upward). The Judgment: Sheng indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. Seeking by (the qualities implied in it) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety. Advance to the south will be fortunate.
