Hexagram 46, Shēng (Pushing Upward): Line 5

升卦六五 · 地风升 · 中文版

六五:贞吉,升阶。

The line (Legge)

The fifth six, divided, shows its subject firmly correct, and therefore enjoying good fortune. He ascends the stairs (with all due ceremony).

Small Image commentary

'He is firmly correct, and will therefore enjoy good fortune. He ascends the stairs (with all due ceremony):' - he grandly succeeds in his aim.

象曰:贞吉升阶,大得志也。

In plain words

Steadfastness brings good fortune: rising step by step. The fifth line is yielding in the place of honour and corresponds to the strong, central second line; with a worthy helper and without haste, it climbs the steps one at a time. The Small Image says it fully achieves its aims.

Applying it to your situation

If you are climbing step by step, this line suggests staying steady and taking things in order. What is your next step?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Shēng changes into Hexagram 48 Jǐng (The Well). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·升之井.

The hexagram

Hexagram 46 Shēng (Pushing Upward). The Judgment: Sheng indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. Seeking by (the qualities implied in it) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety. Advance to the south will be fortunate.
