Hexagram 30, Lí (The Clinging Fire): Line 3

离卦九三 · 离为火 · 中文版

九三:日昃之离,不鼓缶而歌,则大耋之嗟,凶。

The line (Legge)

The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject in a position like that of the declining sun. Instead of playing on his instrument of earthenware, and singing to it, he utters the groans of an old man of eighty. There will be evil.

Small Image commentary

'A position like that of the declining sun:' - how can it continue long?

象曰:日昃之离,何可久也。

In plain words

Brightness in the setting sun: if one does not beat the pot and sing, there will be the laments of old age: misfortune. The third line is at the end of the lower trigram, like the sun about to set; the choice is between accepting one's time with song and lamenting it. The Small Image asks how the light of the setting sun could last.

Applying it to your situation

If you feel a stretch of your life is passing, this line suggests enjoying it openly rather than lamenting it. What is worth enjoying now?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; both are yang, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Lí changes into Hexagram 21 Shì Kè (Biting Through). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·离之噬嗑.

A recorded case from Takashima

Li to Shi He: a marriage the reading advised against: A friend about to marry received the third line of Li, "the light of the setting sun". Takashima read Li as parting and said the match was better not made; the friend did not believe it, married, and before long separated over family discord.

The hexagram

Hexagram 30 Lí (The Clinging Fire). The Judgment: Li indicates that, (in regard to what it denotes), it will be advantageous to be firm and correct, and that thus there will be free course and success. Let (its subject) also nourish (a docility like that of) the cow, and there will be good fortune.
