Hexagram 30, Lí (The Clinging Fire): Line 2

离卦六二 · 离为火 · 中文版

六二:黄离,元吉。

The line (Legge)

The second SIX, divided, shows its subject in his place in yellow. There will be great good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'The great good fortune (from the subject of the second line) occupying his place in yellow' is owing to his holding the course of the due mean.

象曰:黄离元吉,得中道也。

In plain words

Yellow brightness: supreme good fortune. Yellow is the colour of the centre. The second line is yielding, central and correct, the ruler of the hexagram. The Small Image says this is because it finds the middle way.

Applying it to your situation

If you are in the right place, this line suggests that keeping to the middle, gently, lets you shine. Where is your "middle" right now?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Lí changes into Hexagram 14 Dà Yǒu (Great Possession). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·离之大有.

The hexagram

Hexagram 30 Lí (The Clinging Fire). The Judgment: Li indicates that, (in regard to what it denotes), it will be advantageous to be firm and correct, and that thus there will be free course and success. Let (its subject) also nourish (a docility like that of) the cow, and there will be good fortune.
