Hexagram 27, Yí (Nourishment): Line 3

颐卦六三 · 山雷颐 · 中文版

六三:拂颐,贞凶,十年勿用,无攸利。

The line (Legge)

The third SIX, divided, shows one acting contrary to the method of nourishing. However firm he may be, there will be evil. For ten years let him not take any action, (for) it will not be in any way advantageous.

Small Image commentary

'For ten years let him not take any action:' - his course is greatly opposed (to what is right).

象曰:十年勿用,道大悖也。

In plain words

Going against nourishment; holding on brings misfortune; for ten years do not act; nothing is gained. The third line is weak, neither central nor correct, at the top of the lower trigram of movement, and cares only for its appetite. The Small Image says this goes far against the way.

Applying it to your situation

This line is a reminder not to live only for the craving of the moment. Which of your recent habits are actually wearing you down?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Yí changes into Hexagram 22 Bì (Grace). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·颐之贲.

The hexagram

Hexagram 27 Yí (Nourishment). The Judgment: Yi indicates that with firm correctness there will be good fortune (in what is denoted by it). We must look at what we are seeking to nourish, and by the exercise of our thoughts seek for the proper aliment.
