Hexagram 19, Lín (Approach): Line 2

临卦九二 · 地泽临 · 中文版

九二:咸临,吉无不利。

The line (Legge)

The second NINE, undivided, shows its subject advancing in company (with the subject of the first line). There will be good fortune; (advancing) will be in every way advantageous.

Small Image commentary

'The good fortune and every possible advantage attending the advance (of the subject of the second line), in company (with the subject of the first),' arises from the fact that those (to whom the advance is made) are not yet obedient to the ordinances (of Heaven).

象曰:咸临吉无不利,未顺命也。

In plain words

Approaching through mutual feeling: good fortune, and nothing unfavourable. The second line is strong and central and corresponds to the fifth; as yang grows, it influences those above. The Small Image says "not yet following commands", which Zhu Xi marked as unclear; it is usually read as not simply obeying from above, but reaching others through firm, balanced virtue.

Applying it to your situation

If you work between those above and below, this line suggests communicating with sincerity and principle rather than simply complying. On what matter do you need to hold to your own judgment?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Lín changes into Hexagram 24 Fù (Return). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·临之复.

The hexagram

Hexagram 19 Lín (Approach). The Judgment: Lin (indicates that under the conditions supposed in it) there will be great progress and success, while it will be advantageous to be firmly correct. In the eighth month there will be evil.
