Hexagram 17, Suí (Following): Line 6 (top)
随卦上六 · 泽雷随 · 中文版
上六:拘系之,乃从维之。王用亨于西山。
The line (Legge)
The topmost SIX, divided, shows us (that sincerity) firmly held and clung to, yea, and bound fast. (We see) the king with it presenting his offerings on the western mountain.
Small Image commentary
'The sincerity is firmly held and clung to, as shown in the topmost line:' - (the idea of the hexagram) has reached its extreme development.
象曰:拘系之,上穷也。
In plain words
Held fast and bound, then tied firmly; the king makes offerings on the Western Mountain. The top line is at the height of following, bound so firmly it cannot be undone; tradition takes this as King Wen of Zhou sacrificing on Mount Qi, with the people following him steadfastly. The Small Image says it is at the top, with nowhere further to go.
Applying it to your situation
If you are deeply committed to a cause or a relationship, this line suggests such steadiness is rare, and it is still worth asking whether you have room left. Does your following come from conviction, or have you become trapped?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; both are yin, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Suí changes into Hexagram 25 Wú Wàng (Innocence). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·随之无妄.
The hexagram
Hexagram 17 Suí (Following). The Judgment: Sui indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. There will (then) be no error.
