Hexagram 17, Suí (Following): Line 5

随卦九五 · 泽雷随 · 中文版

九五:孚于嘉,吉。

The line (Legge)

The fifth NINE, undivided, shows us (the ruler) sincere in (fostering all) that is excellent. There will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'He is sincere in fostering what is excellent:' - his position is correct and in the centre.

象曰:孚于嘉,吉,位正中也。

In plain words

Good faith in what is excellent: good fortune. The fifth line is central and correct and corresponds to the second, following what is good with sincerity. The Small Image says this is because its position is central and correct.

Applying it to your situation

If you are choosing what to follow, this line suggests following what is good with your whole heart. What good thing most deserves your full commitment now?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Suí changes into Hexagram 51 Zhèn (The Arousing Thunder). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·随之震.

The hexagram

Hexagram 17 Suí (Following). The Judgment: Sui indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. There will (then) be no error.
