Hexagram 17, Suí (Following): Line 3
随卦六三 · 泽雷随 · 中文版
六三:系丈夫,失小子。随有求得,利居贞。
The line (Legge)
The third SIX, divided, shows us one who cleaves to the man of age and experience, and lets go. the little boy. Such following will get what it seeks; but it will be advantageous to adhere to what is firm and correct.
Small Image commentary
'He cleaves to the man of age and experience:' - by the decision of his will, he abandons (the youth) below.
象曰:系丈夫,志舍下也。
In plain words
Clinging to the grown man, one loses the little boy. Following, one seeks and finds; it is favourable to stay settled and steadfast. The grown man is the fourth line above, the little boy the first line below. The third line leaves the lower for the higher, a good choice. The Small Image says its aim is to let go of what is below.
Applying it to your situation
If you have decided to follow a worthier direction, this line suggests letting go of what you are leaving and settling into the new course. What do you need to let go of to take the path you really want?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; both are yin, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Suí changes into Hexagram 49 Gé (Revolution). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·随之革.
The hexagram
Hexagram 17 Suí (Following). The Judgment: Sui indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. There will (then) be no error.
