Hexagram 17, Suí (Following): Line 2

随卦六二 · 泽雷随 · 中文版

六二:系小子,失丈夫。

The line (Legge)

The second SIX, divided, shows us one who cleaves to the little boy, and lets go the man of age and experience.

Small Image commentary

'He cleaves to the little boy:' - he cannot be with the two at the same time.

象曰:系小子,弗兼与也。

In plain words

Clinging to the little boy, one loses the grown man. The little boy is the nearby first line, the grown man the fifth line, its proper partner. The second line is weak, follows what is close and loses what it should follow. The Small Image says one cannot have both.

Applying it to your situation

If you face two choices, this line suggests working out which one you truly should follow, since you cannot keep both. Are you trading something big for something small right now?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Suí changes into Hexagram 58 Duì (The Joyous Lake). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·随之兑.

A recorded case from Takashima

Sui to Dui: whether to marry a daughter to a widowed gentleman: A widowed gentleman sent a go-between to ask for the hand of Judge Bitō's eighteen-year-old daughter. The second line of Sui, "holding to the young man, losing the grown man", led Takashima to guess the suitor was old and the daughter might not want him; the judge declined the match.

The hexagram

Hexagram 17 Suí (Following). The Judgment: Sui indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. But it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. There will (then) be no error.
