Hexagram 9, Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming): Line 2
小畜卦九二 · 风天小畜 · 中文版
九二:牵复,吉。
The line (Legge)
The second NINE, undivided, shows its subject, by the attraction (of the former line), returning (to the proper course). There will be good fortune.
Small Image commentary
'By the attraction (of the subject of the former line) he returns (to its own course),' and is in the central place: - neither will he err in what is due from him.
象曰:牵复在中,亦不自失也。
In plain words
Drawn back together: good fortune. The second line is linked with the first and returns with it; sitting at the centre, it neither strays nor loses itself. The Small Image says that being drawn back while keeping to the middle means not losing oneself either.
Applying it to your situation
If you and a companion run into an obstacle together, this line suggests stepping back together and supporting each other. Who could adjust course with you?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; both are yang, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Xiǎo Chù changes into Hexagram 37 Jiā Rén (The Family). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·小畜之家人.
The hexagram
Hexagram 9 Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming). The Judgment: Xiao Xu indicates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and success. (We see) dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west.
