Hexagram 8, Bǐ (Holding Together): Line 6 (top)

比卦上六 · 水地比 · 中文版

上六:比之无首,凶。

The line (Legge)

In the topmost SIX, divided, we see one seeking union and attachment without having taken the first step (to such an end). There will be evil.

Small Image commentary

'He seeks union and attachment without taking the first (step to such an end):' - there is no possibility of a (good) issue.

象曰:比之无首,无所终也。

In plain words

Drawing close without a beginning: misfortune. "Without a beginning" means not drawing close early and of one's own accord; another reading is having no leader to follow. The top line comes last, after everyone else has already joined the fifth line, and it has missed its moment. The Small Image says there is no good end this way.

Applying it to your situation

If you keep hesitating about whether to join in or take a stand, this line suggests that waiting too long can also mean missing out. What are you waiting for?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Bǐ changes into Hexagram 20 Guān (Contemplation). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·比之观.

The hexagram

Hexagram 8 Bǐ (Holding Together). The Judgment: Bi indicates that (under the conditions which it supposes) there is good fortune. But let (the principal party intended in it) re-examine himself, (as if) by divination, whether his virtue be great, unintermitting, and firm. If it be so, there will be no error. Those who have not rest will then come to him; and with those who are (too) late in coming it will be ill.
