Hexagram 61, Zhōng Fú (Inner Truth): Line 3

中孚卦六三 · 风泽中孚 · 中文版

六三:得敌,或鼓或罢,或泣或歌。

The line (Legge)

The third SIX, divided, shows its subject having met with his mate. Now he beats his drum, and now he leaves off. Now he weeps, and now he sings.

Small Image commentary

'Now he beats his drum, and now he leaves off:' - the position (of the line) is the appropriate one for it.

象曰:或鼓或罢,位不当也。

In plain words

Meeting its match: now beating the drum, now stopping, now weeping, now singing. The match is the top line, its partner. The third line is weak, neither central nor correct, with no good faith to hold to, and its moods swing back and forth. The Small Image says its position is improper.

Applying it to your situation

If your moods often rise and fall with other people, this line suggests finding inner steadiness again. What keeps changing your mood?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Zhōng Fú changes into Hexagram 9 Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·中孚之小畜.

The hexagram

Hexagram 61 Zhōng Fú (Inner Truth). The Judgment: Zhong Fu (moves even) pigs and fish, and leads to good fortune. There will be advantage in crossing the great stream. There will be advantage in being firm and correct.
