Hexagram 58, Duì (The Joyous Lake): Line 2
兑卦九二 · 兑为泽 · 中文版
九二:孚兑,吉,悔亡。
The line (Legge)
The second NINE, undivided, shows the pleasure arising from (inward) sincerity. There will be good fortune. Occasion for repentance will disappear.
Small Image commentary
'The good fortune attached to the pleasure arising from (inward sincerity)' is due to the confidence felt in the object (of the subject of the line).
象曰:孚兑之吉,信志也。
In plain words
Joy in good faith: good fortune, regret vanishes. The second line is strong and central; though right next to the people-pleasing third line, it holds to good faith and is not led astray. The Small Image says its aims are trustworthy.
Applying it to your situation
If someone around you relates by flattering, this line suggests responding with good faith. What sincerity do you most need to hold to now?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; both are yang, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Duì changes into Hexagram 17 Suí (Following). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·兑之随.
The hexagram
Hexagram 58 Duì (The Joyous Lake). The Judgment: Dui intimates that (under its conditions) there will be progress and attainment. (But) it will be advantageous to be firm and correct.
