Hexagram 54, Guī Mèi (The Marrying Maiden): Line 3

归妹卦六三 · 雷泽归妹 · 中文版

六三:归妹以须,反归以娣。

The line (Legge)

The third SIX, divided, shows the younger sister who was to be married off in a mean position. She returns and accepts an ancillary position.

Small Image commentary

'The younger sister who was to be married off is in a mean position:' - this is shown by the improprieties (indicated in the line).

象曰:归妹以须,未当也。

In plain words

The marrying maiden waits to be the principal wife, but in the end goes as a secondary wife. The key word may mean waiting, or an elder sister. The third line is neither central nor correct: its ambitions are high but its place is low. The Small Image says its position is not proper.

Applying it to your situation

If the position you want keeps not coming, this line suggests accepting the reality and starting with what you can do. What in your present place is worth doing well?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Guī Mèi changes into Hexagram 34 Dà Zhuàng (Great Power). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·归妹之大壮.

The hexagram

Hexagram 54 Guī Mèi (The Marrying Maiden). The Judgment: Gui Mei indicates that (under the conditions which it denotes) action will be evil, and in no wise advantageous.
