Hexagram 53, Jiàn (Gradual Progress): Line 5

渐卦九五 · 风山渐 · 中文版

九五:鸿渐于陵,妇三岁不孕,终莫之胜,吉。

The line (Legge)

The fifth NINE, undivided, shows the geese gradually advanced to the high mound. (It suggests the idea of) a wife who for three years does not become pregnant; but in the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'In the end the natural issue cannot be prevented. There will be good fortune:' - (the subject of the line) will get what he desires.

象曰:终莫之胜,吉;得所愿也。

In plain words

The wild goose gradually reaches the hill; for three years the wife does not conceive, but in the end nothing prevails against them: good fortune. The fifth line is central and correct and corresponds to the second, but the third and fourth lines keep them apart for a long time; in the end they come together. The Small Image says it gains what it wished for.

Applying it to your situation

If you have long been kept apart from someone or something, this line suggests persisting: in the end you may get your wish. What makes you willing to keep waiting?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Jiàn changes into Hexagram 52 Gèn (Keeping Still). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·渐之艮.

The hexagram

Hexagram 53 Jiàn (Gradual Progress). The Judgment: Jian suggests to us the marriage of a young lady, and the good fortune (attending it). There will be advantage in being firm and correct.
