Hexagram 49, Gé (Revolution): Line 5
革卦九五 · 泽火革 · 中文版
九五:大人虎变,未占有孚。
The line (Legge)
The fifth NINE, undivided, shows the great man (producing his changes) as the tiger (does when he) changes (his stripes). Before he divines (and proceeds to action), faith has been reposed in him.
Small Image commentary
'The great man produces his changes as the tiger does when he changes his stripes:' - their beauty becomes more brilliant.
象曰:大人虎变,其文炳也。
In plain words
The great person changes like a tiger; without consulting the oracle, there is trust. The fifth line is strong, central and correct, the ruler of the hexagram; its change is thorough and bright. The tiger's changing stripes picture how clearly the change shows. The Small Image says its pattern is brilliant.
Applying it to your situation
If you are leading a change, this line suggests doing it openly and honestly, and trust will follow. Can people understand your change at a glance?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Gé changes into Hexagram 55 Fēng (Abundance). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·革之丰.
The hexagram
Hexagram 49 Gé (Revolution). The Judgment: (What takes place as indicated by) Ge is believed in only after it has been accomplished. There will be great progress and success. Advantage will come from being firm and correct. (In that case) occasion for repentance will disappear.
