Hexagram 46, Shēng (Pushing Upward): Line 3
升卦九三 · 地风升 · 中文版
九三:升虚邑。
The line (Legge)
The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject ascending upwards (as into) an empty city.
Small Image commentary
'He advances upwards (as into) an empty city:' - he has no doubt or hesitation.
象曰:升虚邑,无所疑也。
In plain words
Rising into an empty city. The third line is strong and correct; the three lines of the upper trigram ahead are all yin, like an empty city with nothing in the way. The Small Image says there is nothing to doubt.
Applying it to your situation
If the road ahead is wide open, this line suggests going forward with confidence. When there is no resistance, what should you watch for most?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Shēng changes into Hexagram 7 Shī (The Army). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·升之师.
The hexagram
Hexagram 46 Shēng (Pushing Upward). The Judgment: Sheng indicates that (under its conditions) there will be great progress and success. Seeking by (the qualities implied in it) to meet with the great man, its subject need have no anxiety. Advance to the south will be fortunate.
