Hexagram 44, Gòu (Coming to Meet): Line 4
姤卦九四 · 天风姤 · 中文版
九四:包无鱼,起凶。
The line (Legge)
The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject with his wallet, but no fish in it. This will give rise to evil.
Small Image commentary
'The evil' indicated by there being 'no fish in the wallet' is owing to (the subject of the line) keeping himself aloof from the people.
象曰:无鱼之凶,远民也。
In plain words
No fish in the kitchen: rising up brings misfortune. The fourth line should correspond to the first, but the second line has already taken the first, so the fourth has lost what should have been its own. The Small Image says this is because it is far from the people.
Applying it to your situation
If you have lost something that should have been yours, this line suggests asking whether you drifted away from it before rushing to fight for it. How long since you looked after the people you depend on?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the fourth place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 1; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Gòu changes into Hexagram 57 Xùn (The Gentle Wind). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·姤之巽.
The hexagram
Hexagram 44 Gòu (Coming to Meet). The Judgment: Gou shows a female who is bold and strong. It will not be good to marry (such) a female.
