Hexagram 42, Yì (Increase): Line 6 (top)

益卦上九 · 风雷益 · 中文版

上九:莫益之,或击之,立心勿恒,凶。

The line (Legge)

In the sixth NINE, undivided, we see one to whose increase none will contribute, while many will seek to assail him. He observes no regular rule in the ordering of his heart. There will be evil.

Small Image commentary

'To his increase none will contribute:' - this expresses but half the result. 'Many will seek to assail him:' - they will come from beyond (his immediate circle) to do so.

象曰:莫益之,偏辞也。或击之,自外来也。

In plain words

No one increases it; someone may even strike it; its heart is not constant: misfortune. The top line is at the end of increase and seeks gain only for itself, so everyone turns away. The Small Image says no one increases it because it is partial, and the attack comes from outside.

Applying it to your situation

This line warns of the cost of caring only for one's own gain. Have you been thinking only of yourself lately?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Yì changes into Hexagram 3 Zhūn (Difficulty at the Beginning). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·益之屯.

The hexagram

Hexagram 42 Yì (Increase). The Judgment: Yi indicates that (in the state which it denotes) there will be advantage in every movement which shall be undertaken, that it will be advantageous (even) to cross the great stream.
