Hexagram 39, Jiǎn (Obstruction): Line 3

蹇卦九三 · 水山蹇 · 中文版

九三:往蹇,来反。

The line (Legge)

The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject advancing, (but only) to (greater) difficulties. He remains stationary, and returns (to his former associates).

Small Image commentary

'He advances, (but only) to (greater) difficulty; he remains stationary, and returns to his former associates:' - they, (represented in) the inner (trigram), rejoice in him.

象曰:往蹇来反,内喜之也。

In plain words

Going on meets obstruction, so it comes back. The third line is the only yang line in the lower trigram; danger lies ahead, so it returns to the two yin lines below and becomes their support. The Small Image says those within rejoice.

Applying it to your situation

If the road ahead is too hard, this line suggests coming back to the people around you: they need you. Who most needs you with them now?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the third place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 6; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Jiǎn changes into Hexagram 8 Bǐ (Holding Together). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·蹇之比.
