Hexagram 37, Jiā Rén (The Family): Line 5

家人卦九五 · 风火家人 · 中文版

九五:王假有家,勿恤,吉。

The line (Legge)

The fifth NINE, undivided, shows the influence of the king extending to his family. There need be no anxiety; there will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'The influence of the king extends to his family:' - the intercourse between them is that of mutual love.

象曰:王假有家,交相爱也。

In plain words

The king reaches his household through virtue: do not worry, good fortune. The fifth line is strong, central and correct, leading by example, and the family is naturally in harmony. The Small Image says they love one another.

Applying it to your situation

If you want harmony at home, this line suggests leading by example. Do you already treat others the way you hope your family will treat each other?

Position

A solid (yang) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Jiā Rén changes into Hexagram 22 Bì (Grace). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·家人之贲.

The hexagram

Hexagram 37 Jiā Rén (The Family). The Judgment: For (the realisation of what is taught in) Jia Ren, (or for the regulation of the family), what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct.
