Hexagram 37, Jiā Rén (The Family): Line 2
家人卦六二 · 风火家人 · 中文版
六二:无攸遂,在中馈,贞吉。
The line (Legge)
The second SIX, divided, shows its subject taking nothing on herself, but in her central place attending to the preparation of the food. Through her firm correctness there will be good fortune.
Small Image commentary
'The good fortune attached to the second six, (divided),' is due to the docility (of its subject), operating with humility.
象曰:六二之吉,顺以巽也。
In plain words
Not taking things into one's own hands, seeing to the meals within: steadfastness brings good fortune. The second line is yielding, central and correct, corresponds to the fifth, and runs the household from within. The Small Image says its good fortune lies in being yielding and modest. This was the ancient expectation of a wife; today it can be read as each person doing their share at home.
Applying it to your situation
If you take care of the everyday, fiddly things at home or at work, this line suggests that care is itself what holds everything up. What quiet effort at home deserves to be noticed?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Jiā Rén changes into Hexagram 9 Xiǎo Chù (Small Taming). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·家人之小畜.
The hexagram
Hexagram 37 Jiā Rén (The Family). The Judgment: For (the realisation of what is taught in) Jia Ren, (or for the regulation of the family), what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct.
