Hexagram 35, Jìn (Progress): Line 1

晋卦初六 · 火地晋 · 中文版

初六:晋如,摧如,贞吉。罔孚,裕无咎。

The line (Legge)

The first SIX, divided, shows one wishing to advance, and (at the same time) kept back. Let him be firm and correct, and there will be good fortune. If trust be not reposed in him, let him maintain a large and generous mind, and there will be no error.

Small Image commentary

'He appears wishing to advance, but (at the same time) being kept back:' - all-alone he pursues the correct course. 'Let him maintain a large and generous mind, and there will be no error:' - he has not yet received an official charge.

象曰:晋如摧如,独行正也。裕无咎,未受命也。

In plain words

Advancing, yet pushed back; steadfastness brings good fortune. Not yet trusted, staying easy and unhurried brings no fault. The first line is at the bottom, just beginning to advance, and has not yet won trust. The Small Image says it walks the right way alone, and staying easy brings no fault because it has not yet received a commission.

Applying it to your situation

If you are knocked back and not trusted as soon as you reach for a chance, this line suggests staying unhurried: trust takes time. Could you simply do the work well first?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the first place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 4; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Jìn changes into Hexagram 21 Shì Kè (Biting Through). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·晋之噬嗑.

The hexagram

Hexagram 35 Jìn (Progress). The Judgment: In Jin we see a prince who secures the tranquillity (of the people) presented on that account with numerous horses (by the king), and three times in a day received at interviews.
