Hexagram 26, Dà Chù (Great Taming): Line 4

大畜卦六四 · 山天大畜 · 中文版

六四:童牛之牿,元吉。

The line (Legge)

The fourth six, divided, shows the young bull, (and yet) having the piece of wood over his horns. There will be great good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'The great good fortune indicated by the fourth six, (divided),' shows that there is occasion for joy.

象曰:六四元吉,有喜也。

In plain words

The horn guard on a young bull: supreme good fortune. The guard is a board tied across the horns to stop it goring. The fourth line holds back the first while it is still young, which takes little effort and works well. The Small Image says there is joy.

Applying it to your situation

If you want to correct something at its start, this line suggests doing it early is easiest. What small problem should you deal with now?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the fourth place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 1; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Dà Chù changes into Hexagram 14 Dà Yǒu (Great Possession). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·大畜之大有.

A recorded case from Takashima

Da Chu to Da You: should his cement works sell this year?: Takashima owned a cement works at Atsuta in Aichi, and its manager asked about the year's sales. The fourth line of Da Chu, "a board on the young bull's horns; supreme good fortune", led him to read that the product would not move this year and should be stored until 1892.
