Hexagram 24, Fù (Return): Line 6 (top)

复卦上六 · 地雷复 · 中文版

上六:迷复,凶,有灾眚。用行师,终有大败,以其国君,凶;至于十年,不克征。

The line (Legge)

The topmost SIX, divided, shows its subject all astray on the subject of returning. There will be evil. There will be calamities and errors. If with his views he put the hosts in motion, the end will be a great defeat, whose issues will extend to the ruler of the state. Even in ten years he will not be able to repair the disaster.

Small Image commentary

'The evil consequent on being all astray on the subject of returning' is because the course pursued is contrary to the proper course for a ruler.

象曰:迷复之凶,反君道也。

In plain words

Missing the way back: misfortune and disaster. If armies are set in motion, there will be a great defeat in the end, bringing misfortune to the ruler of the state too; for ten years no campaign can be made. The top line is at the end of the hexagram, furthest from the first line, lost and not returning. The Small Image says this goes against the way of a ruler.

Applying it to your situation

This line is a reminder of the cost of being lost too long. Is there something you keep doing though you know the direction is wrong?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Fù changes into Hexagram 27 Yí (Nourishment). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·复之颐.

The hexagram

Hexagram 24 Fù (Return). The Judgment: Fu indicates that there will be free course and progress (in what it denotes). (The subject of it) finds no one to distress him in his exits and entrances; friends come to him, and no error is committed . He will return and repeat his (proper) course. In seven days comes his return. There will be advantage in whatever direction movement is made.
