Hexagram 22, Bì (Grace): Line 2

贲卦六二 · 山火贲 · 中文版

六二:贲其须。

The line (Legge)

The second SIX, divided, shows one adorning his beard.

Small Image commentary

'He adorns his beard:' - he rouses himself to action (only) along with the (subject of the) line above.

象曰:贲其须,与上兴也。

In plain words

Adorning the beard. The beard grows on the chin and moves with it; the second line is weak and has no partner in the fifth, so it clings to the third line beside it and moves with it. Adornment cannot stand alone; it must attach to something real. The Small Image says it rises together with the one above.

Applying it to your situation

If you are supporting someone, this line suggests growing alongside the right person. Whom do you depend on, and is that good for both of you?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Bì changes into Hexagram 26 Dà Chù (Great Taming). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·贲之大畜.

The hexagram

Hexagram 22 Bì (Grace). The Judgment: Bi indicates that there should be free course (in what it denotes). There will be little advantage (however) if it be allowed to advance (and take the lead).
