Hexagram 19, Lín (Approach): Line 5
临卦六五 · 地泽临 · 中文版
六五:知临,大君之宜,吉。
The line (Legge)
The fifth SIX, divided, shows the advance of wisdom, such as befits the great ruler. There will be good fortune.
Small Image commentary
'What befits the great ruler' means the pursuing the course of the due mean.
象曰:大君之宜,行中之谓也。
In plain words
Approaching with wisdom: what befits a great ruler; good fortune. The fifth line is yielding and central in the place of honour; it trusts and employs the firm, central second line below instead of doing everything itself, and that is wisdom. The Small Image says this means walking the middle way.
Applying it to your situation
If you are in a coordinating role, this line suggests that knowing how to use people and let go is wisdom. What could you safely hand to someone else?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the fifth place, which is a yang (odd) place, so it is not in its proper place. It holds the centre of the upper trigram. Its partner is line 2; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Lín changes into Hexagram 60 Jié (Limitation). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·临之节.
The hexagram
Hexagram 19 Lín (Approach). The Judgment: Lin (indicates that under the conditions supposed in it) there will be great progress and success, while it will be advantageous to be firmly correct. In the eighth month there will be evil.
