Hexagram 16, Yù (Enthusiasm): Line 2

豫卦六二 · 雷地豫 · 中文版

六二:介于石,不终日,贞吉。

The line (Legge)

The second SIX, divided, shows one who is firm as a rock. (He sees a thing) without waiting till it has come to pass; with his firm correctness there will be good fortune.

Small Image commentary

'(He sees a thing) without waiting till it has come to pass; with his firm correctness there will be good fortune:' - this is shown by the central and correct position (of the line).

象曰:不终日贞吉,以中正也。

In plain words

Firm as a rock, it acts on the signs before the day is out; steadfastness brings good fortune. The second line is central and correct, does not sink into pleasure, and notices early signs. The Great Commentary quotes it: to know the first signs, is that not divine? The Small Image says this is because it is central and correct.

Applying it to your situation

If everyone around you is comfortable, this line suggests staying clear-headed and stepping away early when something feels wrong. What signal should you notice sooner?

Position

A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; both are yin, so they do not respond.

If this line moves

With this line moving alone, Yù changes into Hexagram 40 Xiè (Deliverance). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·豫之解.

The hexagram

Hexagram 16 Yù (Enthusiasm). The Judgment: Yu indicates that, (in the state which it implies), feudal princes may be set up, and the hosts put in motion, with advantage.
