Hexagram 13, Tóng Rén (Fellowship): Line 6 (top)
同人卦上九 · 天火同人 · 中文版
上九:同人于郊,无悔。
The line (Legge)
The topmost NINE, undivided, (shows the representative of) the union of men in the suburbs. There will be no occasion for repentance.
Small Image commentary
'(The representative of) the union of men appears in the suburbs:' - his object has not yet been attained.
象曰:同人于郊,志未得也。
In plain words
Fellowship in the open country: no regret. The top line is furthest out, away from everyone; it has no one to join with, but no strife either. The Small Image says its aims are not yet achieved.
Applying it to your situation
If you are on the edge and cannot find companions, this line suggests that is not all bad: at least there is less strife. From the edge, what can you see clearly?
Position
A solid (yang) line in the top place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is not in its proper place. Its partner is line 3; both are yang, so they do not respond.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Tóng Rén changes into Hexagram 49 Gé (Revolution). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·同人之革.
A recorded case from Takashima
Tong Ren to Ge: a boardroom fight, and whether he will lose his post: A company's president and its major shareholders had fallen out, and the shareholders wanted a general meeting to replace the officers. An officer afraid for his post received the top line of Tong Ren, "fellowship in the outskirts; no regret". Takashima advised him to take no side and stay out of it.
The hexagram
Hexagram 13 Tóng Rén (Fellowship). The Judgment: Tong Ren (or 'Union of men') appears here (as we find it) in the (remote districts of the) country, indicating progress and success. It will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to maintain the firm correctness of the superior man.
