Hexagram 13, Tóng Rén (Fellowship): Line 2
同人卦六二 · 天火同人 · 中文版
六二:同人于宗,吝。
The line (Legge)
The second SIX, divided, (shows the representative of) the union of men in relation with his kindred. There will be occasion for regret.
Small Image commentary
'(The representative of) the union of men appears in relation with his kindred:' - that is the path to regret.
象曰:同人于宗,吝道也。
In plain words
Fellowship within the clan: regret. The second line is the only yin line in the hexagram and corresponds to the fifth, but it limits itself to those close to it, which is narrow. The Small Image calls this a way that leads to regret.
Applying it to your situation
If you only spend time with familiar people, this line suggests a small circle can hold you back. Does your judgment rest on voices of only one kind?
Position
A broken (yin) line in the second place, which is a yin (even) place, so it is in its proper place. It holds the centre of the lower trigram. Its partner is line 5; one is yin and the other yang, so they respond to each other.
If this line moves
With this line moving alone, Tóng Rén changes into Hexagram 1 Qián (The Creative). The Jiaoshi Yilin verse for this change (Chinese): 焦氏易林·同人之乾.
The hexagram
Hexagram 13 Tóng Rén (Fellowship). The Judgment: Tong Ren (or 'Union of men') appears here (as we find it) in the (remote districts of the) country, indicating progress and success. It will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to maintain the firm correctness of the superior man.
